Hebrews 7

Posted by hillsidethinking on July 11, 2009

1) Melchizedek introduced Abram with an aspect of God, “Most High”, that he was not familiar with.  What is an aspect of God that you recall learning from someone?  Have you seen others learn any aspects of God from you?

2) The priesthood was passed down from generation to generation.  What positive and negative heritage have you inherited?  How has that shaped you?

3) As High Priest, Jesus makes intercession for us.  What he is praying about?

Hebrews 6:9-20

Posted by hillsidethinking on July 6, 2009

1) Verse 9 mentions “things that accompany salvation”.  What are these things?

2) We are to love the saints (vs 10).  How do you do this?  Are you loving your family and your Hillside family in a way that impacts unbelievers around you? Do they want what you have?

3) Are you a consumer (taking what you can) or a resource (giving to others)?  Would people in your sphere of influence miss you if you were gone?  How will Hillside be seen by the community….would it be missed if it were gone?

4) Do you try to show others that you are followers of Christ or do you live it out?

Hebrews 4

Posted by hillsidethinking on June 14, 2009

God’s promise + my faith=rest for me.

1) What has God promised me?  Do I have faith that it will happen?  Why?  Am I experiencing God’s rest?

2) What desires am I holding onto, rather than being open to God’s desires for me?

3) In my time with God, do I experience rest?  Why or why not?

4) Do I test my thinking with God’s word to discern whether my thoughts are correct and driven by the correct motives?

Hebrews 2

Posted by hillsidethinking on May 31, 2009

1) Hebrews 2 describes the humanity of Jesus.  He became like us and dwelt among us (John 1:14) and fulfilled certain roles (Is 61).  He limited His divine nature in order to relate to and help mankind.  Jesus is called our brother (Heb 2:17)…as children of God we have the same Father.  If we are to emulate Christ’s example, how do we become like and dwell among the people that God wants to reach through us?  What qualities and attitudes did Jesus have that caused Him to impact those that were often looked down upon by other people?

2) Other than Jesus, who is someone that has made such an impact in your life that you want to emulate them?  Why?

3) Jesus was tempted by Satan to exercise his divine nature (Matt 4:1-11).  In what ways are we tempted?  In what areas do we need Jesus to be our High Priest (Heb 2:17)?

Hebrews 1

Posted by hillsidethinking on May 28, 2009

We would like to provide a forum on this blog for processing the Saturday night teaching.  One thing that jumps out from Hebrews 1 is found in verse 3 where Jesus is referred to as “upholding all things by the word of His power”.  If you think about the purposes that God has called  you to and then consider the “obstacles” in your way, how does verse 3 impact your thinking and how you live your life?  Does God’s word transform your thinking and your actions?

Are there other thoughts about Hebrews 1 that you would like to share?

Jesus: Why did He have to die?

Posted by hillsidethinking on April 8, 2009

How deep, yet how appropriate of a topic to start our discussion. Here are some discussion starters:

  • What is the significance of Jesus’ death?
  • What is the significance of “blood” throughout the bible?
  • What is atonement or “propitiation?”
  • What does this all have to do with “The Lord’s Supper/communion?”
  • What is God revealing to you as you ponder?

Please feel the freedom to express your thoughts here, whether or not they are complete or partial. Ask questions, write stories, add dreams or visions if you have them. Also, does anyone have the digital picture of our small group with the Reeves? If so, let’s add it to this blog.

Be blessed today as these specific weeks we celebrate and focus even more our eyes upon Jesus and all he has done for us!

…beginnings and puzzle pieces:

Posted by hillsidethinking on April 7, 2009

It has been a current thought for some time now to piece together not just my own thoughts, but our thoughts collectively as a family. It seems we each have pieces of a larger puzzle. If we each are able to describe each piece we hold, another may realize they have a matching side, and another…and another, until connections are formed and a larger picture is displayed. My hope is that with time, and discussion, we can all step back and see the great picture God is giving to us at this time in all of history. May Jesus, who has created all we are about to explore, guide us to see his beautiful picture that he has been longing to reveal to each of us for some time. Enjoy!
